No Smoke Without Fire

A new study (see link at the end) blames so called “light” cigarettes for a huge rise in cancer risk. The study concludes that smokers who use light cigarettes tend to inhale more deeply in order to “maintain the accustomed absorption of nicotine”.

The results of the study are frightening but unfortunately no surprise at all to Allen Carr’s Easyway. Allen Carr was trying to make people aware of the issue with so called light cigarettes decades ago. It’s another indication of how wrong the medical and scientific establishment can get their advice.

Allen Carr explained clearly that smokers who used light cigarettes were being lulled into a false sense of security (that light cigarettes were less harmful) because they would unknowingly inhale deeper, for longer, more frequently in order to get the amount of the drug that they had become accustomed to (it is natural for an addict to increase their use of the drug the longer they take it). Allen was ignored and successive UK Chief Medical Officers continued to advise smokers to smoke light cigarettes. Unfortunately women were more likely to switch to light cigarettes in the mistaken belief that they might be less harmful. It could be considered the medical establishment’s first foray into the twilight world of “harm reduction” – the latest version of which heralds nicotine sprays, e-cigarettes, and other smokeless nicotine products.

In the 50’s, 60,s and 70’s the horrific use of beagle dogs to assess levels of nicotine, tar, and other poisons taken into the body by smokers did not take into account a smokers ability to change their smoking behavior (by inhaling deeper, for longer periods, more frequently) as the dogs were hooked up to machines that force fed them unrelenting “regulated” doses of smoke into their lungs indefinitely. The images of this happening are nightmarish and harrowing enough – the fact that the science behind the experiments was so fatally flawed renders them even more so.

Allen Carr’s Easyway organisation remains fearful of the effects of e-cigarette use in the same way. Users of e-cigarettes seem to be able to regulate the amount of nicotine they imbibe in an almost homespun fashion. They are able to use e-cigarettes more often with less restriction. Not only is there very little data (if any) relating to the long term effects of e-cigarette use (or any smokeless nicotine use for that matter) science is extremely likely to make the same mistake as it did with light cigarettes and ignore the likelihood that e-cigarette users will dramatically increase the amounts of nicotine they imbibe compared to when they were smoking cigarettes. Who knows how many decades we’ll have to wait to find out the truth about that.

In terms of the way e-cigarettes are being marketed and advertised we’re headed back toward the dark days of the 1950s, 60’s, and 70’s when the nicotine industry denied that their products were addictive – let alone harmful.

Allen Carr’s Easyway To Quit Smoking method is effective for smokers of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, as well as users of nicotine patches, gum, sprays, and e-cigarettes.

The Metro reports in detail on the study.
