I feel calm as I stub out that last cigarette with Allen Carr’s Easyway

“‘Not that Alan Carr!’ I shout at my friend as he asks what I’m doing for the weekend. He thinks I’m going to see the toothy, camp comedian. I am in fact going to spend the day at an Allen Carr Quit Smoking session…

I’m not going to bore on about what they teach you, it’s radically different to the willpower method which has never worked for me for more than four days at a time because I have the willpower of a gnat.

In my group there are tough looking men who have tried and failed to quit several times, a women who got off fags then lost her parents and started chaining it again, two fashionable women who work and smoke their brains out together.

Throughout the day pocket sized Emma (our counsellor), who smoked 50 a day for 20 years, rips apart every preconception I have about smoking with bald logic…..

At the end of the day we are encouraged to smoke our last cigarette alone. Out in the bright sunshine one of the fashion ladies is sobbing. I’m not crying though, I feel calm as I stub out that last cigarette because I’ve realised – I’m not giving anything up.”
